regret to open this editorial with some sad news, but, as many of you
already know, Sheperd Paine - "Shep" to all of us enthusiasts who have
devoured his handbooks and admired his masterpieces- has left us. Jim
DeRogatis (friend of Shep's and his biographer ) has written a beautiful tri-
bute to him, but allow me to remember who Shep was and what he meant
to the world of scale modelling in general and figure modelling in particu-
lar. He was the true forerunner, the one everybody was influenced by and
who brought about the evolution from simple game to art form.
A man gifted with a formidable historical culture, he considered his fanta-
sy works among the peaks of his art. An eclectic and versatile figure, he is
the true father of the modern scale modelling.
Reading Jim's article and a debate on a famous social network, I felt com-
pelled to ask myself what we are actually aiming for when we paint a figu-
re. Is it an artistic interpretation or adherence to reality? Quoting from the
debate mentioned above , are we some Picassos, some Monets, capable of
"interpreting”, to quote hyper-realistic sculptor Duane Hanson? I struggle
to find a universal answer, possibly because there is no such thing. It can't
be found in Art with a capital A, where one is always bent on searching for
new forms of expression, nor is it to be found in our art, where, on reaching
a point close to technical perfection, we seek different ways to express our-
selves. Lately, I have been seeing some incredibly fascinating painting
experiments, round figures painted as if they were two-dimensional illu-
strations, as if they were comic strips. And I don't just mean fantasy figures
or superheroes, but also more properly historical subjects. I find myself
stunned at the use of colour and technical mastery of those who are able to
go further, who dare to "interpret” a piece rather than limit themselves to
regular colours. But then -yes, there's always a "but" to everything- I
watch the photos of the uniforms kept at the Armeé of Paris or a German
camouflage and my historical side screams in outrage.
It's up to us to decide how to approach a figure, how to tackle a subject, it's
mainly a hobby after all. Let's enjoy it, let's use it as a vent, a safe shelter,
let's never ever stop having fun!
