I hope that
the answer
that springs to mind is
because you enjoy doing it.
I know that I do – although
it is sometimes very easy to
lose sight of the fact that this
is the number one objective
because other factors can
easily cloud your judgement.
Earlier this month,
I enjoyed a trip to
Heronbrook and stopped
in a bed & breakfast nearby
with a lovely party of anglers
from Manchester. Among
them was a chap called Phil
Tiler, and talking to him
over dinner one night really
brought this home to me.
He was recalling an
argument he had that day
on a Heronbrook match,
with one of the local
anglers, after drawing a peg
with a feature 16 metres
away, and this local telling

him how he must sh to
this feature. Phil was having
none of it. He only wanted
to sh 13 metres because he
doesn’t enjoy shing long
lengths of pole. Apparently,
the well-intentioned local
angler became increasingly
frustrated by this because
obviously he knew how
important going to a full 16
metres was in helping Phil
to catch sh.
Then Phil put things back
into perspective, when he
told him: “I have come for
a holiday with my mates. I
love shing and want to get
some bites and catch some
sh, but to be honest it’s just
a joy to be here. But I won’t
be shing 16 metres because
I don’t enjoy it.”
So basically, whatever
happened on that peg, or
the festival, Phil was going
home happy. He was there
to enjoy himself and that
was his number one priority.

I must admit, the following
day when I drew a not so
great peg and struggled,
this was soon forgotten.
I was competitive again
and raging, until I turned
around and saw Phil – who
had a similar day to me –
smiling at me from the lake
behind.
At the end of the day,
whoever you are and
whatever level of ability
you are, you probably got
into pole shing for the
same reason – because you
enjoy seeing the oat go
under, and catching sh.
And nothing, whether it be
competition, not being able
to afford the latest tackle, or
indeed what others might
think of you, should come
before this in your list of
priorities.
