The rd Sinquefield Cup was won by Aronian, who played very
solidly and deserved the clear first place with / . Second
placed was shared by players: Carlsen, Giri, Nakamura and
Vachier-Lagrave, all with / . In the interview Carlsen was
very unhappy about his result and the level of play, the same
as Caruana who let slip away a lot of promising positions and
"only" scored . / .
The very strong Abu Dhabi Open had winners, all with
points. Best a er tiebreak was Grandelius Nils, who admitted
that it was his biggest success ever. Kravtsiv, Jobava,
Areschenko and Rapport were the other co-winners.
The Spanish Champion is Vallejo Pons, who was the clear
favorite for the title and had a start-finish victory.
Kasper Piorun won the Barcelona Open with the great score
of . /
nd- rd places were shared by Edouard Romain and
Daniel Vocaturo, both with / .
In just a week from now, the FIDE World Cup will start in Baku.
Most of the players are deep in the preparation because the
pairings were already published. The next week is quite calm,
but then the excitement will start.

Of course all this has been played many times before.
It was clearly not the tournament of Caruana or So, as both
players missed a lot of chances in the previous games and
were ranked on the lower end of the crosstable. Anyhow, the
game we are going to see is a very exciting one. From the
opening Caruana managed to get a big attack on So’s king and
a huge advantage, but he missed the best continuation in the
tactical calculations. The game then became very unclear and
finally ended up in a draw.
