In this period spent less often on the workbench I have had the opportunity to spend
some evenings watching TV and in particular some programs that promised an in-depth
dive into history by telling us of peoples, battles and figures whose names still echo in
our times.
The outcome was a row of awful shows and films! I understand the desire to try and
lure the younger generations by embellishing historical events, but this is going way too
far.
I don't just mean uniforms reproduced all wrong or just plain invented. Worse, we have
the complete invention of facts, battles and motivations.
I felt like I was watching one of those blockbusters in which the hero defeats entire
armies using nothing but his rifle or he single-handedly liberates the skies during the
Battle of Britain.
Why, I ask myself? Why? Can't they just find a balance between entertainment and
historical accuracy? We can live with a few special effects and some exaggerations, but
turning, say, a Carthaginian general who kept Rome in check into a dim-witted uncouth
savage is way too much.
However, there have been instances of well-crafted historical TV shows that had some
questionable points, but still managed to come off as entertaining and somewhat truth-
ful. For example, "Rome", "Band of Brothers” or "The Pacific”; they all reveal the effort
to create fiction that aims to tell a story while still entertaining. We are talking about
shows that enjoyed commercial success, proving that it is possible to create a quality
show that appeals to a wide audience.
I hope the eagerness to create fifth-rate productions will soon give way to the desire to
produce historically accurate shows that deal even with periods that have been seldom
featured so far, like WWI or the 19th century.
