Programme Title(s): BEng (Hons) in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering
Programme Code(s): H292
Module Title: INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN 2
Module Code: 5HX507
Module Leader: Derek Spalton
Lecturer: Derek Spalton
Assignment No: ONE
Assignment Title: DRAINAGE AND PAVEMENT DESIGN
Weighting: 100%
Issue Date: 4th February 2016
Drainage Hand-in Date: 10th March 2016
Carriageway/Pavement Hand-in Date: 21st April 2016
Introduction
This assessment is designed to give the student a practical awareness of the importance of good design practice in the field of highway design.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to:-
1. Understand the basis of operational design and construction of roadworks, railways and drainage and the ways in which utility services are distributed.
2. Design roadworks, railways and drainage to current standards, including the specification of suitable materials for construction.
3. Evaluate the cost benefits and regimes available for the maintenance of infrastructure.
The Brief
You have been briefed by the Client (University of Derby) to provide drawings and details, to allow them to cost and submit planning proposals to extend Markeaton Street, Derby DE22 3AW to allow two way traffic and better bus links
You have been supplied a drawing showing the area for works to be completed under a Section 38 to the existing adopted carriageway.
The client has indicated that from TRICS (part of the site is to be sold to a distribution company), the new traffic generated will be as follows:
Single Carriageway (S2)
Life = 20 years (new)
AADF = 5000
OGV1 = 400
OGV2 = 550
PSV = 200
You are to design the drainage based on your simple 3D alignment. Provide evidence of site investigation, fully design the pavement section and specify materials for the contract. Further to this your work will need to comply with CDM and economic implications should be considered.
The site has environmental constraints that you need to consider in any solution.
Your work is to be presented as a short report with associated documents and A2 size drawings (an electronic copy is also required).
Marks Weighting:
Traffic calculations 10%
Drainage design 25%
Drawing production and Alignment 15%
Pavement design 20%
Specification 15%
CDM/Environmental/Economic 15%

Submission Requirements
The assignment will need to be between 3500 words and 4000 words in length and conform to the appropriate written assignment standard for the elements specified.
Plagiarism
An “academic offence” is committed when a student tries to gain improper advantage for her/himself, or not following the Academic Regulations, concerning any part of the assessment process. Please refer to the 3Rs statement http://www.derby.ac.uk/academic-regulations
Submission Date
See face sheet.
The assignment must be handed in to the Student Information Centre at Markeaton Street on or before the date of submission. Late submission risks being penalised.
It is University policy that assignment work will normally be returned within a maximum of three weeks after the date of submission. Under exceptional circumstances eg due to illness or where work is retained for external examiners, extended return dates may be published.
Please note that the three week period refers to semester weeks and does not include student holidays like the Christmas or Easter break.
Work will normally be returned via student drawers or will be available for collection from the lecturer’s office. Your module leader or lecturer will advise you which method will be used
eSubmission
In order to reduce unnecessary travel and queuing time for students, the University is moving to electronic submission (eSubmission) of all assignments where this is possible. Your tutor will advise you if this is not the case for the assignments of this module.
Start by taking a look at the eSub website www.derby.ac.uk/esub as this is the main site supporting students with eSubmission and provides support documents and videos to talk you through the whole process.
You will also find a printable guide In the Assessments area of your module called Electronic Submission Guide for Students this will talk you through the submission process and guide you to further resources to help you submit your work.
Grading Scale
The Undergraduate Grading Scale
This scale applies to Levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the University Credit Framework. The descriptors are typical characteristics of the standard of work associated with each range of marks. The descriptors are illustrative and for guidance only. They are not comprehensive. A mark of 40% is regarded as a minimum pass. For a comprehensive view of this scale please refer to the 3Rs document on page 28-40. http://www.derby.ac.uk/media/derbyacuk/contentassets/documents/academicregulations/Assessment-regulations-for-undergraduate-programmes.pdf
