WELCOME
This month the Queen will become Britain’s longest reigning monarch, surpassing her great-great-
grandmother’s time on the throne, and we’re marking the occasion with a special article in this issue
recalling the release of the ‘Wildings’ definitives back in the 1950s.
Philatelically speaking the reigns of Victoria and Elizabeth II couldn’t be more different. While the
Victorian era witnessed the arrival of the postage stamp and saw a handful of new stamps issued
over the years, the number of stamps issued during our current Queen’s reign is almost impossible to
calculate, making Her Majesty’s portrait perhaps the most reproduced image of all time.
The challenge of choosing a favourite Queen Elizabeth II stamp is therefore quite a difficult one, but that’s what we
asked our experts for this issue and we received some lovely stories, including the tale of one young stamp dealer who
happened upon a QEII rarity that helped him begin his career in stamps.
To coincide with our celebrations this issue comes with a free set of royalty-themed stamps, courtesy of Guernsey Post.
The stamps were originally issued to mark the Queen’s 85th and Prince Philip’s 90th birthdays, and this year the philatelic
bureau are releasing a single £10 value on behalf of Alderney, celebrating the Queen’s reign. These are just some of the
thousands of stamps to have been issued over the past six decades, providing we collectors with a multitude of stamp

MEET THE EXPERTS…
Professional writer Chris West has written about many
different subjects, from crime fiction through history to
how to start a business. He has written two books on
stamps, including
First Class: A History of Britain in 36
Postage Stamps.
His latest ‘Stamp Story’ is on page 59.
Author and historian Dane Garrod is a fellow of the
Royal Philatelic Society London, past Vice President of the
National Philatelic Society, photographer of proceedings
at the annual UK Philatelic Congress, and presenter of
displays to local societies.
Amanda Grieve has been interested in stamps since
childhood and started working for Packs & Cards while
completing her PhD in Archaeology. Her latest column
on GB-related philatelic collectables on is on page 28.
