ith noise around the referendum already dominating the political news and
likely to get louder, it is a cruel coincidence that an EU botch has quietly
swallowed up the European Union Youth Orchestra. A campaign is gathering
ground as I write so hopefully, by the time this magazine reaches you, some sort of solution
will have been found. If not, go to

pressure in the right places.
What’s frustrating about the situation is that no one has actually decided that the orchestra
isn’t worth funding, or that there are other ways to achieve the same aims and the money is
better spent elsewhere. It more seems to be the case that the framework within which the
orchestra existed has been dismantled as part of a general cultural policy tidy-up. Yes, it is
di cult to quantify the value of cultural ambassadors and sure, running an orchestra is an
expensive business – that won’t come as surprise to any of you. But really, in the scheme of
things, a 40-year-old institution, choked o almost by accident? It’s all wrong.
More politics as the government released its white paper on the future of the BBC on 12
May. e wider issues have been chewed on endlessly elsewhere, so let’s focus on classical
music, where it seems there is reason to feel somewhere on the relieved/cautiously optimistic
spectrum. e issue of distinctiveness is high on the agenda, and one of the very few
mentions of Radio 3 is to note that it is ‘quite clearly distinct from commercial competitors’.
Also, the fact that the station has ‘supported live classical music events outside of London’
sees it singled out for praise in the eld of ‘cultural partnerships which provide great value
for viewers and listeners’. Finally, the paper moots the creation of a £20m ‘public service
content fund’ to be spent with organisations other than the BBC creating programming in
underserved areas – with classical music identi ed as one of them.
Meanwhile the latest quarterly Rajar gures put Radio 3’s reach at a three-year high of 2.12
million. In the current climate, they’d better be careful not to get too successful.
