Beat the
jungle
FOR those of us who own Fire
Force by Ouickbeam, and find
that they are getting frustrated
by the fact trial they cannot get
past the 'crack troop' infested
jungle. I have found a way to go
on to the next phase and miss
out the jungle.
1) Ma ke su re that there is
only one joystick plugged in!
2) Once the game has load-
ed. press the fire button so that
the computer shows the select
colour screen. Then press
3) T h i s g e t s i n t o t h e
authorisation c o d e s c re e n .
Then press 'C'.
4) This will give you the pass
code s c r e e n . U s i n g t h e
joystick to move around type
out " IMFTC" with no spaces.
Then g o o n t o t h e ve rtica l
arrow.
5) Th is then catapults you
past the jungle.
Your readers mig h t like to
note that if the Bre a k key is
pressed d u r i n g a n o r m a l
game, before they ru n out of
men, they will be sent back to
the beginning with eight men
but wit h t h e ir o ld sco re t o
recontinue wh e re they left off
last time — and so to build up
their score.
And a note of appreciation. If
it weren't for people like the Ex-
pert, the country would grind to

I read with interest the March
edition o f Dragon User, and
particularly the Editorial.
One s e r i o u s p r o b l e m
within t h e 'a ma te u r' p u b li-
cations as I myself know is a
lack o f articles. Newsletters
such a s Dra g o n Mo n th ly,
Dragon's Tail etc. even even
myself wit h t h e Dra g Ma g
(Prestel: 700110021 q u i c k
plug!) d e p e n d h e a vily o n
readers' articles. etc. It would
appear f ro m y o u r editoria l
that you wish all articles. etc.
to be centred on Dragon User,
Surely these smaller publi-
cations have a place. S u p -
pose DU eventually co me s
Having worked with amateur
publications myself, I under-
stand your concern. It may
come as a surprise to know
that most editors have the
same pr obl e m t o s o m e
degree.
I s ta nd by last month's
editorial, but perhaps I can
make the thinking be hind
my comments clearer here.
Dragon Us e r ha s m i nute
resources c o m p a r e d t o
many c om pute r publ i c a -
tions, but it still has a cir-
culation vastly larger than
any othe r Dragon publica-
tion, a nd is able to retain
the s e rv i c e s o f pr ofe s -
sional w r i te r s b y c o n -
tributing, albeit modestly,
to their efforts to make a liv-
ing. This is to everybody's
benefit: suppliers have the
maximum scope for adver-
tising, a nd users have the
largest body o f feedback
from other readers. And we
have a s te a dy s upply o f
good contributors.
Even so Dragon User fre-
quently ge ts submissions
which it has to turn down
because the same idea has
been covered too ofte n in
the pa s t; I a m also aware
that there is a fund of ideas
comes to an end, then user
groups a n d newsletters will
be all the Dragon has on offer.
On t h e b ri g h t e r s i d e ,
I don't doubt that DU requires
a great extent of articles, but
surely t h e re a r e e n o u g h
Dragon u se rs t o fe e d a n y
publication with articles. The
time has come when we ALL
must p a rticip a te w i t h o u r
beloved micro, helping every
magazine/newsletter to con-
tinue its work k e e p i n g the
Dragon alive!

What I am suggesting is
not that users should stop

don't see this as a threat to
user groups. O n the c on-
trary, t h e m o r e t h a t
separate groups are able to

mon g r o u n d , t h e m o r e
ideas will arise, and this will
in turn give rise to further
ideas for readers to c on-
tribute to their own groups
or newsletters.
The more active Dragon
users a r e , t h e m o r e
response they will get from
other users; this is just as
true for newsletters as it is
ware to anyone wh o writes to
us telling us what they would
like to see for the Dragon and
Tandy.

IN the January 1987 edition of
Dragon Use r the Expert said

This is damaging to the morale
of t h e Dra g o n co mmu n ity. I
certainly h a ve n o t g ive n u p
hope and feel ve ry optimistic
provided d a m a g i n g a n d
mindless suggestions are kept
outof the view of Dragon users.
I would like to see an apology
printed by the Expert.
Anyone w h o r e g u l a r l y
watches B B C 2 's Micro Live
will notice that the Dragon is
always left out of the reports. I
have wrieen to them complain-
ing about this several times but
I have never received a reply.
There mu st b e thousands of
Dragon Users who watch this,
and i t t h e ma jo rity o f t h e m
wrote t o th e B B C a n d co m-
plained about it then I think it
would convince those involved
that th e Dragon is alive and
kicking.

Where a r e a d e r h a s a

lies and pass on any relevant
information. However, while
orders can get lost and have
to be chased up, we do think
that chasing an order placed
on 5 th o f January o n a nd
before the 21st of January is
over optimistic. It is general-
ly acceptable t o a l l ow 2 8
days for a mail order delivery
before starting to worry. 3 6
days for final delivery is in-
deed a bi t o n th e le ngthy
side, but not unusual when a
company has to deal with a
rush of orders.
It is a very good idea in-
deed t o w ri te t o th e B B C
about Mi c r o Liv e . a n d l e t
them know that the Dragon is
still active. We think that they

relatively simple task for such
users to substitute appropriate

once at the beginning of a pro-
gram. it is a simple task to con-

during operation by using two

codes each time and as a prin-
ciple, this still holds true.

The above changes allow prin-
ting without spaces between
cells with Analyzer. Th is ma y
be useful when using Analyzer
for presentations where some

To use the facility type/to get
COMMANDS, then (P)rint and
choose the start row. You are
now prompted with SPACES?
which is the default so that if
you d o not press N Analyzer
prints w i t h sp a ce s. I f y o u
pressed N, you are prompted
with TAB: which allows you to
print with a tab of zero. which is
the d e f a u l t , t o fi f t e e n .
Therefore to have the text all
the way to the right. enter 15.
In t h e above e xa mp le t h e
line 00 is printed three times.
The first line is with spaces as
typed in. Th e second lin e is
without spaces and zero TAB.
The third line is without spaces
and TAB15.
Note that cells COO and GOO
start with a space and to do that
you must type a letter to get into
INPUT a n d th e n b a ckspa ce
and then press the space bar.
Now to clear up a possible
confusion with giving the print-
out a title. To give the printout a
title press/then T and enter the
title.
If you now wish to see the ti-
tle, a g a in p re ss / then T. To
leave t h e t i t l e u n to u ch e d ,
press CL E A R. I f yo u p re ss
ENTER, the title is erased. If
you type something and press
ENTER, then this is the new ti-
tle. The title gets printed when
you choose the (P)rint option.

Analyzer
WITH re g a rd t o yo u r reader
who vvrote a b o u t t h e p rin t
routine i n A n a l y z e r ( M r ,
Van Wamelin-Dumalin), there
seems to be no problem there
except that he did not realise
that Analyzer prints a sp a ce
between ce lls fo r readability,
he must think it's a word pro-
cessor.
I have written so me altera-
tions to allow printing without
spaces.
To remove these spaces re-
quires a change in th e p ro -
gram. Then you would have to
type the text across the cells
with sp a ce s wh e re desired,
making the screen display look
odd.
Please note that part of line 333
should read:
PLAY"T150 X ; CE G E G B "
where 0 is the letter and not
zero. This will give a proper in-
tro tune. The other error is:

TO me in my apparent ignor-
ance an Epson is an Epson is
an Epson — o r was. Recently
my Epson (a n FX-80) b ro ke
down and I was forced to pur-
chase a n o t h e r p rin te r. N o t
being able (or willin g ) to pay
Out for another Epson. I pur-
chased a cheaper one describ-
ed as 'Epson compatible', and
all my printing programs func-
tion identically.
However, a reader has ques-
tioned the compatibility of my
February article and his Epson
printer (a n MX -8 0 Typ e III).
From what I could see from the
photocopies o f a f e w o f th e
pages o f h is Epson ma n u a l
that he sent me, it could well be
that the code that I use to set
the printing modes (27, 33 o r
ESC!) is NOT valid on this type

MAG BASE is a menu-driven
database f ro m P u ls e r S o ft-
ware, specially designed for in-
dexing articles and letters. etc.
from magazines. Records can
be saved on tape o r d isc for
future reference, and a single
sided disc could contain 2000
records in a single file or com-
bination of files. The program
can a l s o ALTER, DE L E TE ,
SORT in alphabetical order,
VIEW. PRINT and MERGE. A
complete d i s c fi l e c a n b e
VIEWed a s a ch e ck o n t h e
records contained within it.
The L O A D o p t io n a llo ws
loading either of a full file (if the
memory permits) or a MARKed
block. The latter is useful as it is
possible t o lo a d re co rd s b y
numbers ( e g 1 t o 1 0 0 ),
characters (eg from A to C) or
pattern s e a rc h (u s in g a n y
keyword). For example. is the
keyword 'disc i s entered in a
pattern search, Magbase will
access a n y records with that
word, wit h in se co n d s, a n d
display them on the screen.
The PRINT option caters for
the S e ik o s h a a n d T a n d y
printers at 80 characters a line,
but other printers can be used
by d e fi n in g alternative p rin t
codes. Records can be double
spaced f o r l e s s t h a n 8 0
characters a line or for easier
reading.
Dragon Use r files
DU contains 800 records of all
letters, a rt icle s a n d list in g s
since Dragon Use r began in
May 1983. Ea ch re co rd co n -
tains information on the sub-
ject area, date, a n d page o f
each item.
The DI f ile cannot be loaded
into the Dragon's memory all at
once, a s it h a s o ve r 5 0 K o f
records. It can be viewed (12 —
DragonDOS) o r lo a d e d i n
marked blocks. Records have
been so rt e d a n d sa ve d i n
alphabetical order, and, in ad-
dition. i t h a s been saved in
small b lo cks (A-C. D-E , F-L ,
etc.) for access to all of a file.
DU hard copy
The hard co p y consists o f a
photocopy of the printout of the
records fro m Ma y to the pre-
sent_ If the tape or disc are pur-
chased with th e records it is
possible to produce your own
copy by using the PRINT op-
tion. If you purchase the hard

you will recognise. even from

. Andrew scored over 30,000
points and lost all three ships to
discover t h e w o r d s P l a y
another game on the screen at
the end. " He phoned u s up,
and h e w a s p le a se d a n d
delighted to have won" said In-
centive's I a n Andrews. " W e
were please wh e n a Dragon
owner won, a s well, because
the second Moon Cresta com-
petition was open to Amstrad,
ABC and Dragon owners so,
although o n l y p e o p le w h o
scored over 30,000 points were
eligible, there was a lot of com-
petition ." Moon Cresta was one
of Incentive's biggest games of
1986. and is still selling well —
although th e y a re producing
no new Dragon software, the
Dragon Mo o n Cresta i s st ill
available.

us, just where is he going to put
a full sized arcade game? We

Moon Cresta has been much
seen in the land just lately. The
winners of Dragon User's Oc-
tober competition each receiv-
ed a copy of Moon Cresta. All
well and good. except that they
were a ll expecting a co p y of
Boulder Crash. Indeed, some
of them already had copies of
Moon Cre s t a . W h a t w e n t
wrong? W e st ill d o n 't know.
Blaby sent us a box of Boulder
Crashes which never reached
its destination. Can we get any
more B o u ld e r Crashes rig h t
now? We cannot. Not for love
nor money.
We will be putting the situa-
tion right as soon as we can. In

started buying computers five
years ago, and quickly hit on
the id e a o f t ryin g t o ma k e
money from their hobby. When
they left school in 1986 th e y
already had a fund of program-
ming experience, and started
to d e ve lo p t h e ir g a me s i n
earnest T h e i r fi r s t g a me ,
Super Ro b in Ho o d , e a rn e d
them enough to join the ESA,
for which they needed E1000 to
invest in their business. Super
Robin Hood has now sold over
11.000 copies and th e ir next
game, G h o s t H u n t e rs i s
already selling well.
Anyone w h o h a s b e e n
unemployed f o r m o r e t h a n
eight weeks, wh o ca n prove
that they have a new business
idea and access to £1000, can
apply to join the EAS at their
local Jobcentre. T h e a llo w-
ance pays E40 a week for one
year, a s long as the business
continues, t o h e l p n e w
