How to submit articles
The quality of the material we can publish in
Dragon User each month will, to a very great ex-
tent depend on the quality of the discoveries that
you can make with your Dragon. The Dragon
computer was launched on to the market with a
powerful version of Basic, but with very poor
documentation.
Articles which are submitted to Dragon User
for publication should not be more than 3000
words long. All submissions should be typed
Please leave wide margins and a double space
between each line. Programs should, whenever
possibkc be computer printed on plain white
paper and be accompanied by a tape of the
program.
We cannot guarantee to return every submit-
ted article or program, so please keep a copy. If
you want to haveyour program returned you must
include a stamped addressed envelope.

I put a spell on you

wright's piece on Data Trees in
theJuly issues, I was impressed
by the simplicity of his spelling
checker. Ho we ve r, o n mo re
matureconsideration, I wonder
if it would work! The algorithm
detectswhether each pair of let-
ters in a given word is 'legal'
within t h e fra me wo rk o f a c-
cepted English spelling prac-
tice, and to a serendipitous peck
proponent like myself, o r the
putative author o f The Silent
Miaouitwouid seem ideal. On a
keyboard, my delicate fingers(l
am six foot five) often spread
over two keys. Yet I sense a pit-
fall in t h e syste m th a t h e is
e mp lo yin g :
Legal words: batter, better, bit-
ter, butter...Possible wo rd s :
boner (bo, ot, tt are legal in those
positions, b u t th is i s n o t a n
English word)'. Similarly, bath
and both and possibly beth are
English, b u t b it h a n d b u t h
are n o t , b u t t h e y a r e s t i l l
legal.
The permissible combinations
of p a irs o f letters in English
should lend themselves to the
typeof manipulation described
in the article, but the unfortunate
fact is that not all permissible
combinations and groups are
actually in use. The language
that wedouseis, probably, 50%

The awesome fact of redun-
dancy in the language is fre-
quently brought home to me by
the difficulty that Patricia, who
works hard as the co-ordinator
of thecharity of which I amchair-
man (since she kindly offers to
type correspondence for me)
has in matching myvocabulary
with her commercial shorthand.
Thetroublewith allcurrent shor-
thand s y s t e m s i s t h a t
allophones (Co u ld t h a t b e
h o mo p h o n e s? E d . ) a r e
represented bysimilar symbols
even if their meanings are dif-
ferent. Hence myoccasional at-
tempts to do this kind of thing
unaided.
The p ro o f reading o n D U
seems to have been undertaken
by just such a routine. I refer to
the somewhat garbled printer
dump on page 3 o f the Ju ly
issue. The listing asprintedwas
confusing to say the least. The
omission of so me characters
and the apparentsubstitution of
others mde it difficult to read.
Could it be reprinted at some
time?
Would you likesomething on
the use of Dragon Basic as a
structured language? The ma-
jority of listings I haveseen in DU
seem to violate every principle
dinned into me when I had to
learn h o w to cope with co m-
puters. promise youthat I would
try to express anything that I
wrote in a simple version of the
language.

to report writing) differs only

They are also there to retype

ters page, as such tips rarely
arrive in a camerable state.
They check the m. The y get
them typeset. The typeset-
ting machine mangles some
of the characters (yes, it's all
done by computers). If they
are lucky, they get to check
them a ga inif not, theydon't.

what's wrong, as I have lost

doubtless why there are er-
rors in it. You don't read the
Evening Standard , then?

Dump help!
WHEN I modified the screen
dump p r o g r a m f r o m t h e
November 1987 issue (for the
Brother 1009 printer) for disc
use (under SuperDOS E6), I
could not make itwork properly;
the tall sideways dump printed
out a large dark band as well as
thediagram. I wasable with a bit
of experimentingtogetthestan-
dard printoutto work, but not the
sideways o n e . C a n a n yo n e
help? My printer is the Taxan

I was sorry to read that Pam
D'Arcy has followed the same
path as manyother Dragon peo-
ple and turned to other work. It
was particularly disappointing
after Pa m produced Formula
One which had to be one of the
best games for the Dragon in a
very long time.
I wo u ld h a ve volunteered
myself fo r the Arcade Arena
spot, but I am too busy in work at
present and also, !think, r m alit-
tle too old!
I am 22 years old and work as
a computer operator. I own a
Dragon 64 (an upgraded 32,
really), plus twin disc drives. I
use t h e A mst ra d DMP 2 0 0 0
printer.' use the Dragon mainly
forgames playing. I have a large
collection of software built up
over 5 years. My interest at pre-
sent is trying to get as much of
my tape-based software to run
on disc as possible. Orange Sof-
trware have been a great help
lately, b u t p u t t i n g m y
Ouickbeam g a me s including
Duplildisk 2 onto disc for me for
a small fee.
I have a problem with Chuckle
Egg + f r o m P a u l B u rg in i t
transfers to disc properly, but
doesn't run. Ca n a n y o f the
readers help me?

Talking of this, the Probyn

tell me that, thanks to their
Dragon samples, they gained
a commission to compile a
book of crosswords. Not on
the Dragon, alas. They won't
stop writing for DU, but they
have something new in store
just after Christmas.
Yes. I think i ts about time

ed fairly recently, we may be
kept in suspense a bit longer.

I know his nose is kept fairly
well to the grindstone by the

grumbling recently about the
lack of letters occasioned by
the (yawn) postal strike so I
may be able to nobble him
while he is waiting for stocks
to build up again.
I put the improvement in
Dragon User programs down
to a fierce editorial selection
policy a n d pul l i ng o u t o f
fingernails. No. but seriously,
DUI readers must realise that
they have accessthrough DU

decidated t o exploring the
Dragon's pos s ibilitie s f o r
years, and have refined their
knowledge of the machine.
DU also gave up publishing

Not being very expert in the
programming field, especially

frustrating sometimes to have
