Materials
Apron & Dish Towel
• White apron
• White dish towel
• Cotton fabrics:

yard each blue
print and green solid
• Bright blue embroidery floss
• Hand-sewing needle
• 2 (¾-inch) flat pink buttons
• Heavy-duty iron-on adhesive
Beaded Valance
• Pale yellow chintz window top-
per 16 inches x desired length
• Violet rubber stamp
• Brushable fabric paints: black,
cornflower, grape, holiday green,
royal blue, white
• Painting sponges
• #4 shader fabric-painting brush
• 3 packages royal beaded fringe trim
• Waxed paper
• Scrap fabric
Project Note
Launder and dry apron, dish towel and
all fabrics without fabric softenener as
directed on care tag; press as needed.
Apron
1.
Flower: Cut 4-inch x 5-inch piece
iron-on adhesive for leaves and 5-inch
x 10-inch piece for petals. Following
manufacturer’s instructions, fuse smaller
piece to wrong side of green fabric and
large piece to wrong side of blue print.
Referring to pattern, cut five petals from
blue print and two leaves from green.
2.
Peel paper backing from pieces and
position on center front of apron; fuse
in place.
3.
Using 3 strands bright blue floss
throughout, work buttonhole stitch
around edge of each fabric piece.
4.
Transfer flower stem to apron;
embroider with buttonhole stitch.
Sew pink button in center of flower
with floss.
Dish Towel
Follow instructions as for apron to fuse
and embroider flower on center front
of dish towel.
Beaded Valance
1.
Place waxed paper inside valance
to keep paint from bleeding through;
lay valance on clean, hard surface.
2.
Mix paints: For flowers, mix 2 parts
each cornflower and royal blue; add 3
parts grape and one small drop black;
blend well. For leaves, mix 3 parts
green with �½ part white and a tiny
drop of black; blend well.
3.
Use large flat end of sponge to apply
paints to stamp. Be sure entire stamp is
evenly covered with paint. Test stamp
and paint on fabric scrap to check for
proper placement and how much paint
to use for a sharp, even image. Place
stamp straight down on fabric, press
down gently, and remove stamp.
4.
When satisfied with results, stamp
flowers across valance, beginning
approximately 1 inch from left edge,
2�½ inches above hemmed edge of
valance. Randomly place stamp
across valance at different heights
and turn stamp so leaves point in
a different direction each time.
Position stamps 3�½–4 inches apart,
adjusting stamped images as needed
as you approach the right edge.
5.
Use shader to touch up large areas
that don’t receive enough paint from
stamp; don’t worry about tiny spots.
6.
Allow paints to dry for 24 hours.
Trim Time
It’s easy to capture a designer look when
you add lavish trims to your decorating
projects. In addition to beautiful fabrics,
it’s one of the things that most expensive
accessories sold at retail have in common.
Many trims are available in coordinating
colors and styles for your mixing and
matching pleasure, and in a variety of in-
seam or surface applications. Following
are some of the most widely available
and often used trims.
Cording
Cording is available in assorted sizes,
either with a lip (for inserting in a seam by
fusing it to a seam allowance) or without a
lip (for gluing onto the fabric surface).
Welting
Welting is cording or piping covered with
fabric. You can purchase it already made,
but it’s easy to make your own with bias-
cut fabric strips that match your project.
Fringe
Fringe is available with a lip for in-seam
applications or with a decorative header
for gluing on or applying with fusible
tape. The fringe itself is available in a
variety of lengths and styles, including
cut, looped, beaded and tasseled.
Tassels &
Chair Ties
Tassel loops can be inserted in a seam,
and both tassels and chair ties can be
used as decorative ties or accents on a
variety of home decor accessories.

Following instructions accompa-
nying beaded fringe, attach to back
of valance, aligning blue ribbon with
edge of valance. Press down firmly. As
you place fringe, check to be sure rib-
bon is not showing on front.
