Dilemmas

crossed my desk,
and I was smitten
by the thing for
the second time
this year. I had
made a start on
an Airfix F.3
earlier in the year
– which came unstuck when I turned
out to be the only modeller on the
planet unable to persuade the canopy
to fit – but the prospect of an ugly two
seater proved too much to resist. All of
a sudden ambitious rows of
Lightnings populate enormous fantasy
collections, supplemented by Jaguars,
Harriers, Hunters and Lord knows
what else from the current Airfix and
Revell catalogues. My last foray into
1/72 was the best part of a decade
ago, and it has been a refreshing
return. The well is bottomless, the
canvas limitless, and only the
customary constraints of time and
ability can hold me back now.
Time and ability. Two things that I
am grateful my contributors seem to
possess in abundance, given the extent
and the quality of their good works.
Just as well really. I meanwhile am
now vacillating between the deep
Pacific and RAF Germany, and where
before it seemed I might end the year
with at least three new finished models
in the cabinet, this now looks like
unlikely. Never mind. I’ll probably get
some Lego assembled if nothing else.

The Big Build – Update Avenger
T
wo dilemmas have
haunted me through the
preparation of this issue,
both of them potential
changes either of direction or
scale, and both look set to drive
me off at tangents again. The New
Year is under way and already my
efforts are being split into
multiple streams. The shelves,
groaning under the weight of
boxes full of half built Heinkels,
can now look forward to receiving
the next batch of unfinished
business, and the workbench is
getting itself ready to be sprayed
a new shade of grey…
The first spanner in the works was
Joachim Geier’s stunning Avenger,
subject of this month’s Big Build. I
want one. I want one with its wings
folded. In 1/48. I want one so badly
that not even the hideous task of
masking all those windows will deter
me, and I want it to have yellow legs,
just the same as the TBM featured
here. Sadly as I am writing this in the
holiday season I am obliged to wait
and will have to make do for the time
being with a Hellcat, of which there
are one or two in the stash, to take the
edge off the appetite, and Tom
Cleaver’s book on the Fabled Fifteen
to keep me keen for the time being.
Oh the harsh realities of a life ruled
by necessity. As if this wasn’t bad
enough, barely had work begun on the
