When asked to write these few introductory
words I hardly expected to find myself writing
the foreword to what is undoubtedly now the
most popular mass-battle fantasy game on
the market! What I was expecting was to be
able to say that Kings of War has come of age
with this, its second edition, always something
of a milestone in the history of a game. I
would have – and can still – acknowledge
that the original Kings of War game has
gained a loyal and growing following amongst
fantasy wargamers. Many converts have
found themselves won over by a mixture of
solid game play, straight-forward but elegant
mechanics, and an approach to development
that plainly puts the player first. This new
edition represents another stride in the
same direction, and is sure to appeal both to
existing devotees and to those discovering the
game for the first time.

So well done Mantic – and well done
especially to its creator and designer
Alessio Cavatore. I have worked together
with Alessio on many gaming projects
over the years, both historical and fantasy,
and have always appreciated his clear and
focussed approach to game design, instinct
for uncluttered rules, and – most of all –
boundless and unquenchable enthusiasm for
games and gaming. I think I can confidently
say that you’ll find plenty of those qualities
in Kings of War along with the surety and
experience that always comes with a second
edition. So, enough from me, muster the
ranks for battle and ready the beasts, let
arrows fly and dice roll, for now is the time
for Kings of War.

Welcome to Kings of War!
i
ntroduCtion
Kings of War is a mass-battle fantasy
wargame set in the world of Mantica,
taking all of the fantasy archetypes and
embedding them into a rich history full
of exciting characters and enigmatic new
races. This book contains all of the core
rules for the game, along with complete
army lists for eleven different forces, and
a selection of magical artefacts for them to
carry into battle.
This latest edition brings together
everything that we’ve learnt in the last six
years, after a very popular first edition, two
Kickstarters, an ever-growing miniatures
range, and thousands of games. The loyal
fans who have been with us through the
previous editions will be able to see the
progress that has been made. We simply
couldn’t have done this without our
wonderful community – the copious
amounts of feedback and many long
hours of hard work from our volunteer
Rules Committee have made this the most
solid set of rules we’ve ever put out – we
couldn’t be prouder. Huge thanks to every
one of you.
The game itself is very fast to play and easy
to learn, but it will take time and experience
to master. With few and simple rules, there
is little to get in the way of the fun and
carnage of epic tabletop battles where
huge armies clash. Mantic’s affordable
prices enable you to build an affordable
and great-looking army that’s simple to
assemble and paint. This unobtrusive rule
set makes Kings of War a challenging game
of strategy, much like chess. Kings of War
allows you to pit your wits against your
opponent, the battlefield and the strengths
and weaknesses of your own army… and,
of course, the dice! The innovative turn
structure lets you play Kings of War using a
stopwatch or a chess clock. As the seconds
tick away, the pressure and excitement
makes Kings of War unlike any other large-
scale war game you’ve ever played before.

rules and army lists so that you can
introduce your friends and club members
to the new and exciting world of the Kings
of War game. On our forums, you can leave
