O
ne of the trials of editing a monthly
magazine at this time of year is
finding new ways of tackling Christmas each
December. It has to be done; you can’t just
ignore it. Readers want an authoritative guide
on where to go and when, and there are
boxes that have to be ticked annually, lest new
readers pick up the magazine and wonder
whether you just didn’t know about, say,
Cotehele’s magnificent garland.
So when a really good story falls into your
lap, you clasp it close to your heart in festive
gratitude. This year, it came thanks to my
good friend and colleague Jackie Butler, who
revealed in passing that she was born in
December 60 years ago, in a Fowey pub, and
would be spending her birthday there this year
in celebration. “Room at the inn!” I squealed.
Thus the headline was written and the deal was
sealed. It’s a fabulous tale full of family history
and cute baby pictures; read it on page 10.
And Sue Kittow, always eager to try
new experiences – the quirkier the better
– expressed an interest in trying out the
Christmas tradition of ringing handbells.
She met the experts in Lanlivery and
Perranarworthal, and was soon dinging
and donging most merrily (page 14).
Elsewhere, we cast our minds back to
Christmases past. Chris Sawle provides
a fascinating insight to the rise of festive
traditions in the 19th century, courtesy of
our sister title the West Briton (page 22),
while Paige Martin meets the ladies who
are compiling a book of Cornish Christmas
carols (page 28).
It’s that time of the year when we
ask you to vote in our annual reader
photography competition; remind
yourselves of the year’s entries on page 44.
Meanwhile, in a moment of madness,
I have promised my six-year-old daughter
that she can actually don ice skates for the
first time when we visit the Eden Project
this winter. Here’s hoping that I’m not
writing the next welcome note from A&E …
