CENTURION BEACH ARMOURED
RECOVERY VEHICLE (FV4018)
We always relish the sight of a BARV and so couldn’t resist shooting
this one in the atmospheric surroundings of the Tank Museum’s Vehicle
Conservation Centre at Bovington. It was previously on display in what is
now the Tank Factory and came to the collection complete from military
stocks when it came out of service. It’s in excellent running order.
As you doubtless know, the Centurion BARV was developed at Instow in
Devon in the late fifties and just 12 were built, by converting old Centurion
gun tanks, by the Royal Ordnance Factory in Leeds. The Tank Museum’s
exhibit served at various times on the two Royal Navy Assault Ships,
HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid.
