ne of the things we found quite puzzling
when we started eating LCHF was what
to put food
on…
you know, the actual
bases for all those delicious things we’re
encouraged to enjoy, like cheeses and
spreads and pizza toppings. So if you’re
anything like us, you’ll be delighted by
‘Back to Bases’ on page 50, which will give you a whole load
of new ideas. Plus – we may have mentioned it before, because
we’re a little obsessed – the recipe for Fathead Pizza in our
cream cheese feature (page 28) is The Bomb. Try it and see!
As always, there’s a lot of action in the LCHF world,
internationally, as well as locally. Our own finance minister,
Pravin Gordhan, proposed a tax on drinks with added sugar
in his budget speech – which will not only add a few billion
to our bottom line (around R7 billion, apparently) but will also
help, in a small way, to address the obesity crisis we’re facing
in South Africa. Obviously much more action is needed, but
we’ll get there.
On that note, we were also quite thrilled to see that British
chain Waitrose reported a 24 percent increase in their sales
of coconut flour in February. And we all know what
that’s
about… the best way to change behaviour is for people to see
the evidence, and that’s clearly what’s starting to happen.
We love being part of the shift towards a healthier world…

WHEN A DOCTOR TOLD REYHANA
THUMBRAN SHE WAS DIABETIC, SHE
APPREHENSIVELY DECIDED TO GIVE
BANTING A GO. IN JUST TWO WEEKS,
HER BLOOD GLUCOSE IMPROVED
DRAMATICALLY – BUT THAT’S NOT
THE ONLY WAY HER LIFE HAS
CHANGED FOR THE BETTER.
will never forget
the moment the
doctor turned to
me with a solemn
look – the kind
you don’t want to
see on a doctor’s
face – and asked grimly, “How
long have you had diabetes?”
Confused, my heart began to race.
“Diabetes?” I asked.
He then informed me that
my blood glucose was 16.9mmol
(normal is around 4.5)! What he
said after that is a hazy memory.
This news hit me like
a wrecking ball. Suddenly, my
hopes of getting myself to gym
and losing weight with my well-
intentioned Monday diets were all
dashed. It felt as if I’d lost a battle
I didn’t even know I was fighting.
I remember going home
and looking at a box of Lindt
chocolates, feeling like I’d received
a prison sentence. I wouldn’t be
able to eat them… ever! Not only
did I have a sweet tooth, but
I was also an emotional eater.
I hated taking medication, but
now I’d be saddled with tablets,
needles and daily finger pricking.
I felt so overwhelmed that I wept.
Six months previously, I’d
noticed that one of my close
friends was rapidly losing
weight. She explained that she
