Introduction

GlaurungServer is a computer program designed to be used as a "remote
brain" for the iPhone chess program Glaurung. When you connect to
GlaurungServer (running on your home computer, or any other computer
connected to the Internet) from Glaurung on your iPhone, the entire
thinking process will take place on the remote computer, and the moves
and analysis will be transfered wirelessly to your phone. Because the
CPUs in modern desktop and laptop computers are much faster than the
iPhone's CPU, running the calculations remotely vastly improves the
speed and strength of the program. It may also help your phone's
battery life last a little longer.

Like Glaurung on the iPhone, GlaurungServer is powered by the latest
version of the free Stockfish chess engine, available from
http://www.stockfishchess.com

GlaurungServer is still beta software. It may not work correctly on
all platforms, and not all features of Glaurung on the iPhone are
supported when using GlaurungServer. In particular, the "Strength"
setting on the iPhone has no effect, and the program will always run
at full strength. If you encounter problems, please write an e-mail
to tord@glaurungchess.com. Keep an eye on the Glaurung web site
(http://www.glaurungchess.com) for updates and bug fixes.

Instructions

Before running GlaurungServer for the first time, edit the config.lisp
file, where you can configure the transposition table size, the number
of search threads, and the server port number. If you don't know what
any of this means, don't worry: The default settings should work fine
for everyone.

Once you are happy with the configuration, open the "glaurungserver"
file, either by double-clicking it or by running it from the command
line. You should now see a black console window with approximately
the following contents:

Server is running on port 1685
Welcome to Clozure Common Lisp Version 1.4-r13119 (LinuxX8664)!
    ?

Before you can connect to GlaurungServer from your iPhone, you need
the IP address of the computer the server is running on. If you are
not sure what your IP address is, you can find it by visiting the web
site http://www.whatismyip.com.

You are now ready to connect to the server from your iPhone. Start
Glaurung, press the "Options" button, and choose "Remote engine". In
the resulting dialog, enter the server IP address, the port number
(1685 by default, it should be equal to the server port number entered
in the config.lisp file), and switch on the "Connected" button.
Connecting to the server may take a while (sometimes up to 20
seconds), don't panic if your phone appears to be frozen for a while.

Glaurung will remember the IP address and port number when you exit
the program, but it will not automatically reconnect the next time you
start it. You'll have to open the "Remote engine" dialog and switch
on the "Connected" button each time.
