Seen in unfortunate circumstances at
Patricia Bay in British Columbia during
March 1942, this camouflaged Crane is
8671 and although the fuselage code
has been painted out the outline of the
number 8 can just be seen. It shows off
the camouflage pattern to advantage
and may have gone on to serve with
132 Fighter Squadron RCAF

Historical Notes
132 Fighter Squadron RCAF and its
Camouflaged Cranes
fter Japan entered World War II the
Pacific seaboard of Canada and
Alaska was swiftly put onto an
operational footing, and this was just as
well as the Japanese launched a major
advance into the nearby Aleutian Islands.
With scant resources to hand the main
priority of the Royal Canadian Air Force was
to protect Canadian territory but it also
sent units equipped with Curtiss Kittyhawk
fighters
and Bristol Bolingbroke bombers
to assist the United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) and United States Navy (USN)
forces serving in Alaska and the Aleutians.
One of the Canadian units involved in
protecting the Pacific seaboard was 132
Fighter Squadron RCAF which was one of
the RCAF's original four Kittyhawk
squadrons, and although three of these
were sent to Alaska to assist the US Forces
132 Fighter Squadron remained behind in
Canada. It was the only RCAF squadron to
operate the Kittyhawk Mk Ia and it spent
most of its time based at Tofino on the
West Coast of Vancouver Island. Along with
the nearby seaplane base of Ucluelet this
airfield had been cut out of virgin northern

Pacific rainforest and these stations were
the RCAF's most westerly outposts.
As well as maintaining its operational
commitment to protect the western point
of the Canadian Pacific seaboard, 132
Fighter Squadron RCAF also served as an
Operational Training Unit for inexperienced
aircrew who were heading north to join the
RCAF Kittyhawk and Bolingbroke
squadrons serving in Alaska and the
Aleutians. This was to cater for the
additional training required to
fly
in the
appalling weather conditions prevalent in
this extremely demanding environment
and as a result the unit took on charge a
number of Cranes and Harvards to
fly
alongside the Kittyhawks. Due to the semi
operational location and the nature of their
work the Cranes and Harvards wore
camouflage rather than keeping their
overall yellow schemes and up until 16th
October 1942 when the RCAF abolished
unit codes on its home based aircraft, these
new additions were given the ZR codes
allocated to 132 Fighter Squadron along
with an individual aircraft letter. Their
original overall yellow
finish
was replaced
by Dark Green and Dark Earth camouflage
although the original yellow undersides
were retained.

A camouflage scheme was applied to the Canadian Warplane Heritage
Museum’s Cessna Crane Mk Ia 7862, CF-FFGF, soon after it arrived in 1976
but following the discovery of wood rot it was grounded, rebuilt and
now wears an overall yellow scheme. This aircraft was delivered to the
RCAF in August 1941 and saw wartime service with 4 SFTS at Saskatoon
and 11 SFTS at Yorkton, Saskatchewan. In November 1945 it was sold to
Canadian Aviation Industries of St. Jean, Quebec and by 1949 it was
owned by Matane Air Service, who
flew
it commercially in the isolated
St. Lawrence North Shore area of Quebec. It was purchased by Doug
Wardle of Rockcliffe, Ontario in 1964 who
flew
it privately for another
twelve years until he donated the aircraft to the museum in 1976.
Following a ten year restoration program the Crane
flew
again after in
November 1986

consulted with my Canadian
friends Carl Vincent and Jim
Bates they made me aware of a
small number of camouflaged
Cranes operated by 132 Fighter
Squadron RCAF at Tofino and I
decided upon building Crane
8672 coded ZR-W wearing a
Dark Earth and Dark Green
camouflage with its original
yellow undersides retained.
The interior of the kit is very nice and includes some useful etched brass
parts, some of which are pre printed but the pilots’ seat frames were very
weak and bouncy so were later reinforced using plastic card bracing

hen this model was
first
released the price
tag of over £50 put it
way out of my reach but
following a good deal with my
local model shop owner
(thanks Dave) I could
finally
afford one so it was taken
home and started immediately.
The intention was always to
build a Canadian Cessna Crane
Mk I or Ia but the kit only
provides for three American
options, two military ones in
fairly basic USAAF and US Navy
Here are the resin Jacobs L4 MB and Lycoming R-680 engines engines
with the two propeller options also provided in the kit alongside the
injected plastic nacelles. The upper pair are the Jacobs engines, which
are to be used for this model however the wooden propellers of the
subject aircraft are not included so these were obtained from a Special
Hobby Oxford
