I am about to relate an adv enture which to m any will appear incredible,
but of which I was in great part an ey e-witness. The few who are
acquainted with a certain political ev ent will, if indeed these pages should
happen to find them aliv e, receiv e a welcom e solution thereof. And, ev en
to the rest of m y readers, it will be, perhaps, im portant as a contribution to
the history of the deception and aberrations of the hum an intellect. The
boldness of the schem es which m alice is able to contem plate and to carry
out m ust excite astonishm ent, as m ust also the m eans of which it can av ail
itself to accom plish its aim s. Clear, unv arnished truth shall guide m y pen;
for, when these pages com e before the public, I shall be no m ore, and shall
therefore nev er learn their fate.
On m y return to Courland in the y ear 1 7 — about the tim e of the
Carniv al, I v isited the Prince of ——— at Venice. We had been acquainted
in the ——— serv ice, and we here renewed an intim acy which, by the
restoration of peace, had been interrupted. As I wished to see
the curiosities of this city , and as the prince was waiting only for the
arriv al of rem ittances to return to his nativ e country , he easily prev ailed
on m e to tarry till his departure. We agreed not to separate during the
tim e of our residence at Venice, and the prince was kind enough to
accom m odate m e at his lodgings at the Moor Hotel.
As the prince wished to enjoy him self, and his sm all rev enues did not
perm it him to m aintain the dignity of his rank, he liv ed at Venice in the
strictest incognito. Two noblem en, in whom he had entire confidence, and
a few faithful serv ants, com posed all his retinue. He shunned expenditure,
m ore howev er from inclination than econom y . He av oided all kinds of
dissipation, and up to the age of thirty -fiv e y ears had resisted the
num erous allurem ents of this v oluptuous city . To the charm s of the fair
sex he was wholly indifferent. A settled grav ity and an enthusiastic
m elancholy were the prom inent features of his character. His affections
were tranquil, but obstinate to excess. He form ed his attachm ents with
