Lists are good. They make you do things. They also make you do
more.
Make a list
of things to do, and you end up being more productive. If I make a list of things to do,
I’ll get them done in half the time. Which leaves time to do more.
When it comes to a list of exciting things – mountains, say – this principle
becomes more enticing. Achieving a goal leaves a vacuum for more goals, maybe
even more ambitious and exciting. But then, that depends on the length of your list.
When your list is the Munros – 282 Scottish mountains – that might be enough
to keep you going for years, and you might not even
want
to do all of them; you
just feel you have to. So why not make your list more personal? More numerically
achievable? How about... oooh, seven? And why not do them in a year? You can
nd out all about this on page 44. And remember:
make
a list – as opposed to
follow
one – and you’re crystallising ambitions, both conscious and unconscious.
When the list fails, intuition takes over. For instance, I was in the Lake District last
month with a morning to spare, and I’d left my list behind. Lacking a phone signal
or internet (with which I could have visited
lfto.com/trail7summits
and
seen what was on the sucker), I didn’t even try to recollect it; the day
was glorious, so I went for a wander up the nearest thing – Mellbreak
– which I’d never been up and always liked the look of. It was fab. And
then I went home, found my list, and guess what? Mellbreak was on it.
I’d started my challenge without realising it. One down; six to go!
