As a tribute to Len Crane (pages 8-9), here are some happier times at The Bratch Pumping Station on one of Len’s steam-ups in 2009. Len restored one of the
pumping engines here at the Severn Trent-owned premises. Sadly, the site is now closed to visitors.

o sooner had we recorded the
death of Richard Preston (of
haulier Prestons of Potto fame
and owner of showman’s engine
Lightning II)
than we heard of
the loss of another highly respected
engineman – Len Crane of Wolverhampton.
Lenny was another ambassador for the steam
preservation movement and a top engineer
to boot.
One of his many achievements in life (and
there were certainly
very
many – see pages 8-
9) was to return to steam the left-hand engine
Victoria
at The Bratch Pumping Station. We
can but only hope that there is now a
concerted effort to restore The Bratch as a
fitting tribute to Len. Sadly the Severn Trent-
owned Ruabon red-bricked building in the
Gothic turret style has not opened to the
public since 2010 – and that’s a crying shame.
Unfortunately, The Bratch is not alone; the
Tees Cottage Pumping Station in Darlington
(Northumbrian Water-owned) did not open
last year, citing “serious safety and structural
issues”, despite the recent completion of a
brand new toilet block at the site.

And now we have what is reported to be the
last season for Snibston Discovery Museum at
Coalville, Leicester, before the site disappears
under new housing, leaving just a small
‘mining museum area’ – and even that is in
doubt until post-election. The council has
approved its closure as it cannot afford to run
the place under the next round of budget
cutbacks, despite protestations from local
residents and the Friends of Snibston.
Where next? Bressingham Steam Museum
has sounded the alarm bells that it is
desperately short of volunteers and is actively
promoting for some new blood. Geography
doesn’t particularly help Bressingham’s cause –
any steam and vintage fans living in the
nearest town of Diss (population 7000) would
probably already be involved. The problem has
no doubt arisen due to ageing volunteers; there
are probably none there now that worked
alongside Alan Bloom to share his original
vision for the place.
The ‘age problem’ will happen more and
more of course, and yet there are still plenty of
bright lights twinkling on the horizon for
steam generally. There’s good news this month
for the future of steam – the Lottery-funded
Engineering Skills Initiative in the north east
had apprentices working on 172 projects
through 22 firms with 91% of students now in
employment and half of them also now
volunteer in the heritage sector.
Closer to home, I note that over half the
members of my local steam club are younger
than me (!) and that my local railway has
appointed a new locomotive superintendent
who is a whole generation below the previous
incumbent, with the side effect that many
younger volunteers have since ‘returned’ to
active volunteering in the department.
Get the young involved; it’s the only way
forward.
